Choosing the right fabric for punch needle is essential because the stitches are held in place by the weave of the fabric and the density of the stitches. In this article we explain the different types of fabric that are used for Punch Needle so you can choose the best fabric for your next project.

For Punch Needle With Yarn

When using a larger punch needle e.g. size 10 and yarn you need fabric with a reasonably open weave. Punch needle aida, monks cloth and hessian are good choices.

Punch Needle Aida

This type of aida is composed of blocks of threads with a perfectly square weave, it is specially softened, making it easy to guide the punch needle into the fabric and create even stitches.

Monks Cloth

Similar to punch needle aida monks cloth has blocks of thread and is a lovely soft fabric to use.

Rustic Linen

If you prefer a more rustic look, rustic linen is also a traditional choice that works well because it has a nice open, regular weave that is well suited to punch needle embroidery.

For Fine Punch Needle With Thread

For fine punch needle you need to use a fabric with a tighter weave.

Cotton Percale

Percale is a closely woven plain-weave cotton fabric made from very fine threads of high quality cotton. The tight weave will hold the punch needle stitches well.
