Knitting uses two long pointed needles and yarn to create fabric. There are lots of different knitting stitches you can use to add texture and shaping to the pieces you make, which can be stitched together to create clothes, toys and homewares. Knitting needles come in lots of different thicknesses and lengths. The size of the needle you choose will change the fabric you knit. Fine yarn knitted on small needles will create a dense fabric while the same yarn knitted on much bigger needles will give you a loose loopy effect.

There are lots of different types of yarn. It comes in different thicknesses. The band that's wrapped around the ball or skein of yarn you buy will tell you what the yarn is made of, what size needles to use, the length, the gauge, washing instructions and a dye lot number.
