Eliana's Home Design DIY Tips (On a Budget)

Recently a few of us here at DMC have experienced the joy of moving. And when I say joy I, of course, am referring to the stress/anxiety/nuisance/excitement/work of it all. Eliana, our all-star, moved a few months ago and has been handling it like a BOSS. She's used her serious DIY skills to help keep her on a budget. And since we've had some apartment envy over her new pad, we thought we'd ask her to share some tips for creating a unique space all your own (and on a budget). DMC: You're a graphic designer/artist and you live with other creative people. Have the arts played a role in how you've decorated your space? Eliana: Absolutely! Everybody played a part when decorating our new home—even my father (he’s a photographer)! I love having things that have a story and  was made by somebody I care about.   DMC: Which rooms have handmade items (either made by you or someone else) in them? Tell us about those things. Eliana: Almost every room in my apartment has something handmade in it: - In the entryway I have 8 handmade woven tapestries for a warm, colorful and rustic touch. Working at DMC has made me fall in love with embroidery. I am now obsessed and have been embroidering myself. Every plate was hand picked by me and my dad except for two of them. Those two were hand painted and given to me by the sweetest lady who used to be my neighbor. It’s one that my brother took and features a saxophone player performing in Times Square. [caption id="attachment_6216" align="aligncenter" width="800"]Eliana's living room gallery wall. My dad also added some wood shelves for towels and greenery (I love plants!). But I wanted to combine different objects to make it more interesting. I Love having the opportunity to make stuff for my house. Most of the time I see something on Pinterest that would go perfect in my apartment but I really try not to get carried away and spend a lot of money, so I make it instead. Plus, it’s a great way to release stress after a long day at the office. I usually stitch on the subway on my way home. Eliana: I love to tell my friends and family the story behind every piece. And of course I love showing off my skills LOL, but more importantly, I love to have details that make my home a lot more personal.   DMC: What is some advice you would give to someone who has just moved? What are creative, budget-friendly ways someone can make their home match their aesthetic? Eliana: I am a Pinterest-a-holic! I love the fact that I can look at beautiful spaces and find tutorials to DIY my way to a beautiful home. My advice to accomplish a budget-friendly beautiful space is to invest money in timeless pieces that would be around for a long time—like your sofa, bed, dining table, etc. But don’t spend a lot of money on accessories and trendy things. In my case, I invested in a good sofa. I picked a light grey color that I knew would be easy to style with fun pillows and blankets. Some of my favorite stores to find affordable decorations are: Target, TJ Max, Marshall's and Home Goods.   DMC: What is your favorite place in your apartment? Why? Eliana: I love my entryway. I mixed two very different styles—bohemian and sophisticated. The woven tapestries add a welcoming, bohemian touch, while a bench accessorized with a velvet throw pillow adds a sophisticated, functional touch. Eliana: I made decorating my apartment a very personal project! I love having friends over so we can all enjoy the results of my hard work.     [associated-products]     Love and Threads, The DMC Team
