Supplies

A motif embroidered on Aida canvas
A piece of stiff fabric (ottoman is the fabric used here) in green and yellow measuring 20 cm x 40 cm
A piece of thermosealable fabric 20 cm x 100 cm
80 cm of fine yellow piping
80 cm of yellow bias binding 2 cm wide
One matching button
A reel of thread matching the fabric
A sewing machine and a special presser foot for piping or zips.

How to prepare the fabric

Cut the ottoman, each piece in the same direction.
For the bottom, cut one yellow square of 13 cm x 13 cm.
For the sides, cut one yellow rectangle and 2 green rectangles of 17 cm x 13 cm.
Cut the 4th side out of the Aida canvas, with the embroidered motif in the centre.
Round off the top corners of each side.
Overcast by machine the sides of each piece.
On the diagram, A represents the bottom, B and B' the two sides in the same colour, C the third side, and D the centred embroidery. The rounded corners at the top are the ones to be cut.
Cut pieces of thermosealable fabric in the same size as the bottom and the sides.
Mount each piece at the back with the help of an iron.

How to assemble

Gradually assemble the sides to the bottom.
Working at the back, pin the bottom of one face to one side of the bottom, making sure the centres meet.
Machine stitch by starting and finishing the seam 1 cm from each end, as indicated on the diagram (the dotted area represents the back of the thermosealable fabric).
Assemble the sides to the bottom one by one, repeating this operation for the 4 sides
Flatten the seams at the back with an iron.

How to mount the piping

Pin the flat side of the piping to the edge of one of the two sides to be assembled, follow the curve at the top without pulling, sew the first seam by machine (see diagram in which the piping is indicated in yellow and the pins in black).
Place the second side to be assembled, face to face, baste, and sew the three layers by machine along the piping, using a special presser foot.
Assemble the 4 sides in this way and make zigzag stitches along the edge to hold more firmly.
Turn the work the right side out.

How to make the upper edge

Unfold the bias binding and place it face to face and edge to edge.
Pin (see diagram: first sew inside the pleat, then fold over the back and finally sew at the back) at the junction, superimpose the bias binding over 0.5 cm, and then cut. Sew at 0,5 cm from the edge.
Fold the bias binding over the back on the inside and fix with a machine-stitched seam 4 mm from the edge or with whip stitching.

How to make the cover

Cut a square of 10 cm x 10 cm out of the green, the yellow fabric and the thermosealable fabric.
Apply the fusible fabric with an iron on one of the squares.
Slightly round the corners and place the remaining square on the fabric that has just been stuck by pinning and rounding the corners, like the others.
Overcast by machine.

How to finish

Apply the bias binding by unfolding it and placing it face to face and edge to edge around the moneybox, and then baste
At the junction, superimpose the bias binding over 0,5 cm, and then cut.
Sew at 0,5 cm from the edge.
Fold the bias binding over the back on the inside and fix with a machine-stitched seam 4 mm from the edge or with whip stitching.
Fix the cover at the back with a few stitches by hand.
Stop and tuck in the threads.
Sew the button on the middle of the cover.
