Supplies

A motif embroidered on Aida canvas
A piece of striped cotton 72 cm x 30 cm
A piece of thermosealable fabric 14 x 11 cm
1 metre of ecru twill (or cord) 5 mm wide
A reel of thread matching the Aida canvas

Size of the finished work: 29 cm x 24 cm

How to prepare the fabric

Overcast by machine all around the striped fabric measuring 72 cm x 30 cm.
Fold over the back 1 cm seams along both 72 cm lengths, flatten with an iron and machine stitch a straight seam 4 mm from the edge along the length (see dotted lines on the diagram).
Fold the fabric vertically to obtain a rectangle measuring 36 cm x 28 cm.

How to prepare the embroidery

Cut off the excess fabric around the embroidery, centring the motif to obtain a rectangle of 16 cm x 13 cm.
Fold 1 cm over the back of each side of the seams and flatten with an iron. Apply the piece of thermosealable fabric with the help of an iron, placing the fusible side against the fabric, on the back of the embroidery and on the entire surface inside the pleats (see diagram, the dotted rectangle represents the thermosealable fabric).
Fold over the hems and then baste.

How to prepare the embroidery (contd.)

Start working on the face of the fabric.
Centre the embroidery on the front of the bag,  8 cm from the bottom pleat, pin so that the hems are tucked in under the surface to be applied and machine stitch a straight seam 4 mm from the edge along the 4 sides (see diagram).
Sew a button on each corner.
Fold the work over the back so that the embroidery is on the inside.
Stitch the side seams, starting from the bottom and stopping 7 cm from the top for the slits.
Flatten the seams at the back with an iron.

How to make the width of the bottom

On one side, place the side seam over the bottom pleat, to obtain a triangular shape.
Place the fabric completely flat and machine stitch 2 cm from the triangle along the width obtained.
Repeat on the other side.
Fold over the triangles inside and hold in place with whip stitches (see diagram D showing, above, a back view of the bottom of the bag and, below, a front view of the bottom of the bag).

How to make the drawstring hem at the top

Fold the pleated edges of each side over the back along the 7 cm slits at the top, and machine stitch
Flatten the seams with an iron (see the upper diagram).
To make the drawstring hem at the top, fold 5 mm of each face over the back, flatten with an iron, make another fold of 3 cm, pin and then machine stitch 3 mm from the edge of the first 5 mm fold. Turn the bag the right side out (see the lower diagram).

How to finish

Cut the twill (or ribbon) into two (2 x 50cm), then with the help of a safety pin, slip a ribbon through the hem on the front and back border, returning to the same side.
Knot the two ends together and repeat, this time starting from the left.
The bag closes by pulling the ribbons on each side.
And now you have a lovely bag to hold your snacks!
