Supplies

Cross-stitch motif on Aida fabric 40 x 40 cm
A piece of polyphane 25 x 25 cm.
A piece of green fabric to match the ribbon 12 x 12 cm.
A spool of green thread to match the fabric and white thread
Satin ribbon 5 mm wide and 30 cm long in spring green
4 pearly buttons 1 cm in diameter in red, purple, yellow and blue
Pins
Sewing needles
A pair of scissors
A sewing machine
A tape measure
An erasable felt-tip pen for fabric
Double-face ribbon 1 cm wide

Size of the finished pencil holder: 12.5 cm x 12 cm

How to prepare the Aida fabric

Cut a rectangle, measuring 27 cm x 28 cm, out of the Aida fabrics and overcast around the edge by machine.
Make the cross-stitch motif in the lower part of the rectangle, leaving a 2 cm margin on the sides and a 1.5 cm margin at the bottom (see diagram).
The cross-stitch motif is placed in rectangle A, as indicated by the dotted line on the diagram below.

How to apply the satin ribbon

Work on the face 14 cm from the top, starting at the pinned bottom along the full width of 28 cm.
Machine sew a straight seam along the entire length and each side (see diagram).

How to fix the button

Work on the face.
Sew the yellow, purple and blue buttons on the satin ribbon, one after the other, using the green thread, and position them between the cross-stitch animal motifs, indicated by a red cross on the diagram.

How to stiffen the pencil holder

Cut a rectangle measuring 13 x 24 cm out of the polyphane (see diagram).

How to line the cross-stitch part

Remove the protective film and apply the polyphane B at the back of the cross-stitch motif A, placing it level with the upper seam of the green satin ribbon. The upper edge of the polyphane should run along the upper edge of the ribbon, while the lower edge should run along the base of the cross-stitch motif.
Turn the work the right side out and apply pressure on the fabric with your fingertips to make sure the Aida fabric is stuck firmly to the polyphane (see diagram).

How to prepare the sides

Work at the back.
Apply the double-face ribbon on each side of the polyphane along a height of 13 cm (see diagram).

How to fold over the edges

Fold over the back the 2 cm margin, set aside at the start, on each side of the pencil holder.
Flatten the pleats with an iron on the upper part and apply the double-face ribbon, previously placed on the polyphane over the bottom part (see diagram).

How to fold over the back

Pleat the upper part A' along the upper edge of the satin ribbon and fold it over the back of the polyphane.  Mark the pleat with a fingernail (see diagram).

How to make the inner side seam

Assemble the edges of part A' by making invisible hand stitches with the white thread. Start the seam at the top and work towards the bottom, make a fastening off stitch at each end (see diagram).

How to close the cylinder

Repeat the preceding operation.
Assemble the edges of part A by making invisible hand stitches with the white thread. Start the seam at the top and work towards the bottom, making a fastening off stitch at each end.
Sew the last red button on the ribbon, like the other ones (see diagram).

How to prepare the base for the bottom

Cut circle C, 8 cm in diameter, out of the polyphane to stiffen the bottom of the pencil holder (see diagram).

How to prepare the bottom

Cut a 10 cm diameter circle D out of the green fabric, and repeat the operation with a piece of white Aida fabric E.
Centre the polyphane circle inside the two fabric circles D and E,  and mark the outline with an erasable felt-tip pen, leaving a 1 cm margin all round.  This line will be used as a guide for the machine stitching at a later stage (see diagram).

How to prepare the bottom seam

Mark two side reference points on part E, leaving one third of the circumference of the circle between them.  Place parts D and E one on top of the other and then pin them.
Baste the two pieces, as indicated by the red dotted lines, along the line you have already traced with a felt-tip pen.  The part placed between the two reference points remain open (see diagram).

How to assemble the bottom

Machine sew along the previously based line, leaving the opening between the two reference points.  Make a fastening off stitch at the beginning and end of the seam (see diagram 14).
Pink all around the edge, turn the pencil holder the right side out, and iron to flatten the seam.

How to stiffen the bottom

Take circle C,  8 cm in diameter, cut out of the polyphane, remove the protective film and place it on the bottom you have just made through the opening.  To slip it in easily, it is necessary to curve the polyphane.  Apply the sticky side to the fabric, making sure that the contour of part C perfectly matches the curve of the seam and that the hem is placed on the same face of part C to keep the bottom in shape (see diagram).

How to close the bottom

Make hems on the inside of E and D along the open section, following the curve of part C and close with invisible overcast stitches (see diagram).

How to assemble the bottom

Make a 1.5 cm hem over the inside of the bottom of parts A and A'.
Assemble these two parts by making invisible hand stitches (see diagram).

How to mark reference points for assembly

Using a felt-tip pen, mark a reference point on each quarter of a circle on part D of the bottom; these will serve as a guide for assembly.
Divide the bottom of part A into four and make a reference point with a felt-tip pen (see diagram).

How to assemble the pencil holder

Match these points and pin together.  Assemble the bottom of the pencil holder to its body by sewing tight overcast stitches to make sure it is solid (see diagram).
