Cushion
 

Before starting, you will need the following supplies

1. A finished embroidery you would like to turn into a cushion.
2. Taffeta in two colours to match the embroidery: 30 x 30 cm in one colour for half of the border and the back of the cushion and 12 x 38 cm in another colour.
3. Reels of thread in matching colours.
4. Synthetic stuffing.
5. A pair of scissors, a sewing machine, a needle.
6. And patience… because it is rather difficult to make!

Size of the finished cushion: 16 cm x 16 cm
Size of the Aida canvas square: 10 cm x 10 cm


First step

Cut a square of 17 cm x 17 cm out of the fabric in the first colour and two strips of 6 cm x 17 cm. Cut two strips of 6 cm x 17 cm out of the fabric in the other colour.

Start working on the front.
The blue square in the middle represents the embroidery.
Place the first strip on the embroidery as shown in diagram 1, and sew from  • to •.
Start and stop the seam 1 cm from the edge of section A.

Now turn to the back.
Open the seams and iron (see diagram 2).


Second step

Work on the front.
Place the second strip on the front as shown in the diagram, and sew from  • to •.
Start the seam from the first strip and stop 1 cm from the edge of section A (diagram 1)

Work on the back.
Open the seams and iron.
Fold strip 1 over the front, and sew from • to • (diagram 2).

 


Third step

Work on the front.
Place the third strip on the front as shown in the diagram 1, and sew from • to •.
Start the seam 1 cm from the edge of section A and stop at the edge of strip 2.
Cut off the protruding green square.

Work on the back.
Open the seams and iron.
Fold strip 3 over the front, and sew from • to • (diagram 2).


Fourth step

Work on the front.
Place the fourth strip on the front as shown on the diagram, and sew from • to •.
Cut off the protruding pink square (diagram 1).

Work on the back.
Open the seams and iron.
Fold strip 3 over the front once again, and sew from • to • (diagram 2).


Fifth (and last) step

Cover the front of the cushion with a taffeta square of the same size.
Machine sew all around, 1 cm from the edge.
Leave an opening (see …).
Stuff the cushion with synthetic cotton fleece and close with invisible stitches.
